Emigrantology is a vast and interdisciplinary area. In its limelight is emigration, which due to historical and political reasons has become a significant phenomenon in Slavic countries. The concept of emigrantology was presented by Lucjan Suchanek at the 12th International Congress of Slavists in Cracow in 1998, during the round table discussions, called "Emigrantology – the science of literature and the culture". In 2000, Yuri Borev wrote: “a new science is born – emigrant science”.
Studies in the exile are conducted from the perspective of many sciences: history, culture studies, literary studies, linguistics, art history, religious studies, sociology, political science, pedagogy and others. One of the most important aspects of the research is the figure of an emigrant as a particular type of man. The analysis of this problem shows that the emigrant – homo emigrants – is one of the anthropological types (human aspects) such as homo socialis, homo oeconomicus, homo religiosus, homo politicus.
The field of interests of the Commission is the history of the Slavic emigration, the fate and the status of emigrants, its institutions (educational institutions, universities, publishing houses and printing industry) and organizational forms (circles, associations, parties), spiritual, religious and political life, various areas of fiction (journalism, documentary studies, essay writing, scientific, philosophical, religious texts), numerous forms of the art: theater, ballet, opera, cinema, visual arts, music, as well as scientific accomplishments.
